Traveling to any country in a wheelchair may come with some concerns.
You may wonder whether you will be able to get around smoothly using public transportation, whether staff will be helpful and accommodating, and whether accessible restrooms will be available, among other things.
However, compared with many other countries, in Japan, wheelchair users can generally receive careful assistance when using public transportation such as trains and buses if they ask the staff for help.
At major stations such as Tokyo Station, if you speak to a station attendant, they will generally guide you smoothly to the platform. When boarding a train, they can provide a dedicated ramp to make it easier for you to board in your wheelchair.
If you let the staff know your destination station in advance, station staff will also be waiting for you when you arrive. They can provide a ramp to help you get off the train and guide you to an elevator.
On buses, if the bus is wheelchair accessible, the driver will generally assist you carefully. Other passengers will also usually be considerate of wheelchair users and people with disabilities, making sure not to obstruct them, so you can feel at ease.
For people who are blind or visually impaired, many sidewalks in Japan also have tactile paving, which is said to make getting around relatively easier. If you ask a nearby passerby for help, they will also usually be willing to assist you.
Accessible restrooms for wheelchair users and people with disabilities are also generally available in stations, other public transportation facilities, and public restrooms throughout the city. Since certain facilities are required to provide accessible restrooms, you can generally expect to find them in larger buildings.
