How to Buy JR East Shinkansen Tickets:
If you are riding the bullet train from Tokyo to Utsunomiya, Sendai, Morioka, Aomori, Hakodate, Niigata, Nagano or Kanazawa, this is the guide for you. These lines are run by JR East (with JR Hokkaido for the Hokkaido section), and they have their own English booking site called JR-EAST Train Reservation. It is a separate service from SmartEX, which covers Kyoto, Osaka and other western destinations. You can also buy tickets at station machines or at a JR ticket office. Details were checked in late October 2026 and can change, so confirm fares and rules on official pages before you travel.

The JR East FAQ says you cannot reserve Tokaido or Sanyo Shinkansen trains on this site, so Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima need SmartEX instead. See our companion guide for JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu lines. The two services have separate accounts, and a booking on one cannot be changed or refunded on the other.
Method 1: JR-EAST Train Reservation
JR-EAST Train Reservation is JR East’s official English booking site for visitors. The JR East FAQ says membership and use are free, with no ticketing fee, and that tickets go on sale from 10:00 Japan time one month before the travel date. You can buy passes and individual tickets there. The site address is on the eki-net.com domain, which is why people sometimes call it “Eki-net English.”
How it works
- Step 1: Create an account. Use an email address you can check while traveling, because booking details are sent there.
- Step 2: Search. Enter your departure and arrival stations, date and time, and number of passengers. A 2026 guide says that if your trip needs a transfer, you may have to search each train separately.
- Step 3: Pick the train and seat. A train that does not appear in the search results cannot be bought through the site for that search.
- Step 4: Choose your ticket type. The same guide describes two main choices for eligible Shinkansen trips: a paper ticket that you collect before boarding, or a Shinkansen e-ticket that you link to a transportation IC card.
- Step 5: Pay and save the details. A confirmation email is not a ticket. You still need to link your IC card or collect the paper ticket.
Shinkansen e-ticket (ticketless boarding)
With the e-ticket, you pay online and link the booking to a transportation IC card such as Suica or PASMO, then tap the card at the gate. The card works like a key to your reservation, and the Shinkansen fare is not deducted from the card balance. According to a 2026 guide, each traveler needs their own IC card, and the linking must be finished a few minutes before departure, so do it the day before rather than on the platform.
Paper ticket pickup
If you choose a paper ticket, you collect it at an eligible reserved-seat ticket machine or ticket counter, using a pickup code or QR code (and, in some cases, the credit card used for the booking). JR East’s pass information says tickets reserved through the site can be collected at reserved-seat machines in the JR East area and at JR ticket offices. Collect return tickets before you leave the pickup area, because pickup is not available at every station. Once a paper ticket has been issued, you generally cannot cancel it on the website and must go to a station counter.
Things to know
- Service hours: A 2026 guide says the site is not available around the clock and has maintenance windows. Do not plan a purchase near midnight.
- Sales cutoffs: The same guide lists deadlines such as a few minutes before departure for online purchases. Check the exact cutoff shown on the site for your ticket type.
- Cancellation fees: That guide says online cancellation is free until 21:00 Japan time on the day before travel, and a small per-person fee applies after that. I could not confirm the current amounts on an official page, so check the fee shown on your reservation before you cancel.
- Passport details for passes: JR East’s FAQ says a passport number entered when booking cannot be edited later, so you must cancel and rebook if it is wrong.
If Your Credit Card Is Rejected
A rejection does not mean the train is sold out. A 2026 guide says JR East’s site notes that some transactions may be restricted by card companies as an anti-fraud measure. Try the card details again, complete any bank authentication, and try a different card if possible. If it still fails, JR East’s own fallback is to buy at a station, a JR EAST Travel Service Center or a reserved-seat ticket machine.
Method 2: Ticket Machines at the Station
JR East’s reserved-seat ticket vending machines let you buy and collect tickets, and the JR East FAQ says tickets can also be bought at major station counters, machines and Travel Service Centers from 10:00 Japan time one month before travel.
Typical steps
- Step 1: Find a reserved-seat machine and press the English button.
- Step 2: Choose the Shinkansen option, then select your stations, date and number of passengers.
- Step 3: Choose a reserved or non-reserved seat, then your train and ordinary or Green Car (Gran Class is available on some trains).
- Step 4: Pay with cash or a card and check your tickets. You may receive one ticket or two. Keep both and insert them together at the gate.
Method 3: JR EAST Travel Service Center and Ticket Offices
- JR EAST Travel Service Center: A counter aimed at overseas visitors, found at selected major stations and airports. JR East’s pass pages say you can buy or pick up passes there with your original passport (not a copy).
- Midori no Madoguchi (JR ticket office): The staffed Green Window office. It can sell tickets, make reservations and handle problems. JR has reduced the number of these offices, so check availability at smaller stations.
- Have these ready: Destination, date, preferred time, number of passengers and whether you want a reserved seat.
Rail Passes
JR-EAST Train Reservation sells eligible JR East passes, and pass holders can make seat reservations through the account flow on the site. JR East’s FAQ is clear that the nationwide Japan Rail Pass cannot be purchased on the site, and its reserved seats cannot be booked there either. If you hold a nationwide pass, make seat reservations at an eligible JR station. For passes you buy online, you must pick them up in Japan with your passport.

Next Steps
Decide whether you want a paper ticket or an IC-linked e-ticket, then book as soon as your date opens if you are traveling in a busy season. If your card is rejected, go straight to a ticket machine or Travel Service Center instead of retrying. If your trip also includes Kyoto, Osaka or other western cities, read the guide for JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu lines for that part.
