Beautiful Scenery in Japan
In this blog, I will gradually introduce some of the beautiful scenery of Japan that I have photographed myself over the years.
This is a photograph of Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture. I visited in November, before the snow began to fall.
Ginzan Onsen is a small hot spring town with a history of around 500 years. It is said that the hot spring was discovered by miners who were working in the mountains where silver was once produced. During the Taisho and Showa periods, the traditional wooden buildings that give the town its current appearance were constructed, and even today, the area retains the nostalgic atmosphere of old Japan from that era.
The hot spring inns in this area are generally quite old, although some have been renovated on the inside. A little farther away, there are also modern hotels made of reinforced concrete.
Since the roads in this small hot spring town are quite narrow, vehicles other than those belonging to guests are not allowed to enter the area. Therefore, if you are simply visiting to take a walk and photograph the town, you will need to park your car at a roadside station”ginzan-taishoromankan” along the way and then take a shuttle bus from there to the hot spring town.
The nostalgic scenery of the town, especially when covered in snow, is particularly beautiful, and the area seems to be especially popular during the winter season. If you plan to stay overnight, it is therefore necessary to make your reservation several months in advance.
